Educational Apps for Kids: Word Superhero #vocabulary #categorizing

Looking for a fun way to practice category identification with kids? The Word Superhero app by Synapse Apps has developed an engaging game-style app that allows kids to expand their vocabulary and understanding of word relationships by performing fun categorizing tasks.

About Word Superhero
Word Superhero was designed by a speech-language pathologist who has spent decades understanding the best ways to help children learn and retain vocabulary. Upon opening the app and choosing your category, a 'storm' of items begins to fly around the screen. Players must tap the items to catch them before time runs out. When the 'Time's Up!' sign pops up, choosing 'Sort!' will take players to a new screen, where they will answer the question, 'Where does it belong?' by sorting their captured items into the correct subcategories. It's a great way to learn new vocabulary words and make semantic connections.

Subcategories include:
  • Food:
    • Type: fruit, veggies, meat, dessert, breakfast, drinks
    • Taste: salty, sour, bitter, sweet
  • Home:
    • Rooms: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, closet, living room, garage.
    • Purpose: grooming, play, furniture, tools, eating, cleaning
  • Animals:
    • Type: mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, bugs, crustaceans, amphibians
    • Place: forest, jungle, desert, water, farm, grasslands
  • Transportation: sky, land, water
  • Clothes: head, body, feet

My kids enjoy this game-style format to categorize and discuss vocabulary that they may not already be familiar with. The drop action beginning builds a lot of excitement and motivation for them to sort their goodies after they've caught all of the items. It's a nice way for me to gauge how much they understand about categorizing, too.
