Speech Apps: Little Bee Speech Articulation Station Pro & Articulation Test Center Pro

As a pediatric private practice SLP, I have a significant amount of clients who are diagnosed with language impairments, but also have underlying articulation concerns. I'll admit that I've found articulation therapy to be pretty dry in the past and I've spent way too many hours trying to "craft" my way into a fun session. Martha Stewart, I am not. On one of my usual internet searches to spice up sessions, I came upon Little Bee Speech. As it turns out, I hit the jackpot. The Little Bee Speech site offers a handful of speech and language apps that are nothing short of incredible. This week, I was looking specifically for articulation apps, so I reviewed the Little Bee Speech Articulation Station Pro and the Articulation Test Center Pro. Check out my thoughts below...

About The Apps
Articulation Station Pro: This app is ideal for speech-language pathologists, teachers, and parents who want to help children improve speech sound delays. It offers specific target sound practice at the word, sentence, and story levels for 22 sounds of the English language. Once your target sound level is selected, you will have the option to generate flashcards or a matching game. Within the flashcard section, you can customize the word list and select 'initial', 'medial', or 'final' sound position. There are also options to select 'Multiple Sounds' and 'Phonological Processes' to include in your word list. A quick tap on the picture provides the child a speech model. Then, record and score the production as either correct, approximate, or incorrect. The number of trials and percentage correct is tallied for you in the upper corner. When the round is complete, save the data for a specific child and review it in detail later using the 'Scores' button. (Check out the 'repeat missed' feature in this section to review difficult words with your child during the next session!) The 'Scores' section also allows you to pull up a list of all scores across sessions, as well as notes and recordings. This data can be printed and/or emailed as quick and easy therapy documentation!

For those of you who run group sessions, you're going to love the easy customization the app offers for each child within your group. Select the 'Group' button and highlight up to 6 names to customize their skill level and target sounds. It's a quick and easy way to make sure you're hitting each group member's targets and the data is collected for you!

Test Center Pro: This app offers both a screener and full test. As stimulus images are presented to the child, the record button allows you to save each response. You can score any errors in real time by touching the letter. A dropdown chart allows you to mark the substitution, distortion or phonological process to score each word. You can also review each response later and edit your score, if needed. The "Notes" button allows you to add any information you may find helpful.

At the end of the stimulus presentation, a Little Bee "Success!" message pops up to reward the child for a job well done. From there, you have the option to record a speech sample and apply an intelligibility rating to it. The app will save the data for each child and generate a report that can be used for documentation, as well as an email that can be sent to parents. It really takes so much of the work out of assessment! Of course, clinician expertise is still required to ensure proper scoring.

Why I Love Them
My caseload happens to be full of high energy, low-attention clients who require high-interest resources to keep them engaged in therapy for any length of time. The minute I introduce the iPad with Articulation Station Pro, my kids are invested. They love the interactive nature and colorful pictures in this app, as well as the game-style format of the matching game. Customization of the word cards with familiar pictures that are personal to them has been a huge hit as well. Parents are appreciative of the session emails that summarize how their child did and for those of you in the schools, it's a great way to keep a line of communication open with parents you don't see each day.

Test Center Pro is one of the coolest articulation assessments I've come across. I wish we had been able to use this in graduate school! It gives a much fuller picture of the child's articulation impairment, it's easier to score errors/processes, it allows you to save and refer back to recorded data, and it saves a massive amount of time on report writing since the app generates it for you. Heidi Hanks has thought of everything with this one.
