Teaching Character Education through a Diverse Book Library at Home

Diversifying your child’s library is so important. It helps them to learn about others, promote positive character traits, and strengthen their identity and self-confidence. This week, we received an excellent holiday book box that is the perfect start to any library. This bundle is from Cardinal Rule Press and many of the books even include reading strategies and discussion suggestions inside!

About the Holiday Box

The Holiday Box includes five paperback titles that promote positive character traits for children to learn about and implement into their own lives. It also includes activities, a craft and a gift for ages 5-9. Our craft was a beaded bracelet with the word Empathy and was a lot of fun to make together.

Lila Lou’s Little Library is an adorable story about a little girl’s love for books and how the family manages her immense collection. They come up with a fantastic idea that benefits her community and will inspire you to do the same!

Kindness is a Kite String offers kids a sweet book of empathy and inclusion. It reminds us how easy kindness is to spread and the lasting impact is has on others.

The Potato Chip Champ teaches kids that everyone has their own strengths, weaknesses and hardships and judgment and jealousy are not the way to live life. It’s a super relatable story that most kids will instantly connect to.

Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun will make you feel emotions so strong you’ll feel like the main character, Lucy, is a real person! As a former educator, I can think of so many kids who would have benefited from this story, both those who bullied and those who were bullied. It’s a powerful story of strength through kindness.

Dazzling Travis teaches kids that no matter their gender, their interests, or style, they are all perfectly acceptable! This book drives home the importance of being who you are and standing confidently and happily in your own choices.

Cardinal Press also sent along a precious board book called The Spoonful of Sweetness and other Delicious Manners. While this book is not part of the Holiday Box, we wanted to share is as a fun way to introduce your little one to key character traits from birth! Reading to babies and toddlers is critical to their development and choosing character-based content lays a strong foundation as they grow.
