2020 Holiday Gift Guide: ThinkPsych First Actions ABA Flash Cards #GIVEAWAY

This season, help your little ones' language skills grow! The holidays are the perfect opportunity to gift fun activities that will boost children's language skills and provide engaging bonding time together. I'm always on the hunt for quality educational gifts and Think Psych First Actions ABA Flash Cards are a fantastic choice to enrich vocabulary and strengthen comprehension skills. While these flashcards were developed as a tool for children with language delays, I highly recommend them for toddlers and preschoolers. The durable double card stock construction creates a thickness that will endure over time and each action is depicted in three ways, using a male, a female, and an illustrated drawing.  Research shows that providing kids with at least three different instances of the same verb helps them to generalize the meaning of the word — another point in this set's favor!

Why I Love It
Those of you who follow us often know that as a speech-language pathologist and educator of many years, I like to promote quality kids products that are genuinely worth purchasing. Understanding action words is what I like to call the 'gateway' to expanding verbal communication. Kids who understand and use a variety of action words are able to engage in conversations and express their wants and needs in a clearer way. These cards make learning action words easy and accessible. I like to turn them into a game, so that my kids can learn and have fun at the same time.

I've shared a few super simple game suggestions below!

Fast Facts about the Set

  • Especially useful for children with autism and other language delays in speech or ABA therapy.

  • Instructional guide makes it easy for parents to teach language to kids.

A Few Suggested Ideas for Use
In addition to the instructions provided by ThinkPsych, I've found my kids really enjoy using the cards in these ways...
  • Act It Out:
    • Easy: Flip over a card, calling out the action, and acting it out together! You'll be surprised how entertaining this is for kids.
    • Hard: Choose a card and act it out for the other person (or group). Allow the other person to guess what your card is as you act it out. If they are correct, they win the card. If they are incorrect, place the card on the bottom of the pile.
  • I Have, Who Has?: This is a group activity, great for family time. Using multiples of the same words, sit in a circle and deal a few cards out to each person. One person will take a turn acting out their card. Then they will say, 'I have (action card), who has a match?'. If a player has a match, they will stand up, act out the action word and say 'I have (action card)'. The player with the most matches at the end of the game wins.
  • Memory Match It: You'll need to prep the deck beforehand and this version works better with children who can't read yet. Place matching cards picture side down and play this game just as you world any other Memory Match It game. For example, turning over the girl who is kicking and the boy who is kicking is considered a match. You'll find that some kids start to pick up on matching the words on the side of the card facing up. I consider that a skill to celebrate, too!

There are so many ways to use these cards, the possibilities are endless. Consider gifting this set for a child you know, a classroom you love or a clinic that would certainly appreciate them!
