Explaining Adoption through Storybooks: 'ABC Adoption & Me' by Gayle Swift #adoptionpicturebooks

For those of you who follow us often, you know that our family is on an adoption journey that has had many twists and turns. We are part of a strong network of adoptive families and how to talk to your child about their adoption story is one of the number one topics that comes up time and time again. We want to be open and honest with our child about how adoption has formed our family and we hope that talking about it from a young age through storybooks and age-appropriate discussion will help to create a sense of security. We are always on the look out for quality books about adoption and as it stands, we are a little disappointed in the amount of picture books that represent this genre. When we come across a story that addresses adoption in a sensitive and uplifting way, it's such an exciting win for us that we want to share it with everyone! "ABC Adoption and Me" by Gayle H. Swift and Casey H. Swift is just that sort of picture book. Whether you're an adoptive family or are looking for a special book to gift to a family you know, we think you'll like it as much as we do! 

 

About the Book
 "ABC Adoption and Me" is a colorful ABC picture book that celebrates adoption and touches on the process and feelings that often come with it, even the difficult ones. We haven't really found any books that address the tough side of adoption in a way that may help kids feel open to talk about it with their parents and we feel like this is an excellent intro into those conversations. Each letter of the  alphabet represents a different aspect of adoption. We have to give a big THANK YOU to the authors and illustrator for including multicultural illustrations to depict a wide range of families as well.

What's more, the beginning of the book includes an instructional page which provides five different suggestions for how to use it and an Adoption-attunement Elements list! We thought this was genius and so appreciated. It's no surprise that “ABC Adoption & Me” has recently been named a finalist in the NGBIA Award contest for 2020.

'An adoptive mother of two now-adult children and a former foster parent, Gayle H. Swift is also a certified coach, co-founder of GIFT (Growing Intentional Families Together–which provides family coaching before, during and after adoption, a former teacher, and former newsletter editor. A staunch adoptee-rights activist, Gayle has presented at the NACAC (North American Council on Adoptable Children) Conference and is available to speak. She believes in the power of books to inform, heal, and create community.'
