Halloween is just around the corner, and while kids love filling their bags with candy, there’s a growing trend for the spooky season that we're so excited about—swapping traditional trick-or-treat candy for a Book Boo Bag! It's a creative twist on Halloween treats which not only promotes literacy, but also encourages a love for reading in a fun and festive way. It’s the perfect way to reduce screen time, too!
Kane Miller EDC Publishing is one of our favorite companies because they have such fantastic, fun and heart-warming picture books for children. They are often our go-to to find quality holiday and birthday gifts. If you need inspiration for your Book Boo Bag this Halloween, here are the titles that will be in our little one's bag:
Holiday Magic Happy Halloween: If you're wanting a book with a little more pizazz, Harriet Stone board book is fantastic for young readers. The illustrator, Giovana Medeiro, uses Venetian window technology to transform the halloween characters with the turn of the page. Watch a mummy turn into a skeleton, a boy into a werewolf and more. Even as an adult I was pretty enamored with it. The story isn't scary, so it's suitable for young readers. This colorful book is definitely going to be a favorite for our kiddo and I know he will be so entertained with turning the pages back and forth.
Billy and the Beast: Beastly books seemed like a great way to go for our Boo Bag this year. Nadia Shireen has created a brilliant, loyal and resourceful girl who always has a trick or two up her sleeve (or in her hair)! We love that the author wrote a strong female figure as the hero of the story and her problem-solving skills are both genius and funny at the same time. The story takes you on a journey as Billy, her pet Fatcat and other woodland animals battle a hungry beast to avoid becoming ingredients in his soup. We're excited to read this with our little one along with her other Billy books as well!
There was a Young Zombie Who Swallowed a Worm: Is anyone else as obsessed with the books that mirror 'There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly' as I am? I just love them and this hungry zombie version does not disappoint. We actually posted about this book last year, but our family loves it so much, I wanted to include it again. The story is funny all the way through and the pictures put the humor over the top. It's a top pick at bedtime. I give a lot of credit to Kaye Baillie and Diane Ewen for finding a way to make otherwise creepy creatures just plain fun!
I Breathe: We've been working on helping our kids with big emotions, so we decided to add this book into our Boo Bag as well. Susie Brooks and Cally Johnson-Isaacs created this book to help kids use their imaginations to teach child-friendly yoga poses and breathing techniques. We are very excited to try this as a family, as a way to practice regulating emotions and spend time together.
There Was a Young Reindeer Who Swallowed a Present: We're gearing up for the holidays with this Christmas-themed booked. Sequencing stories are very big in our house and Kaye Baillie and Diane Ewen have created a really fun one. Nothing is safe from this rapacious reindeer, not even Santa! We can't wait to read it together after trick or treating is finished.
This Halloween, consider stepping away from the traditional candy exchange and embracing the joy of reading with Book Boo Bags. Not only will it help instill a love for reading in children, but it also offers a fresh and exciting way to celebrate the holiday. So, gather your books and bags, and get ready to create a Halloween experience that’s both spooky and enriching!
