Baugher's Orchard: Apple Picking Time!

This week we've finally begun to feel the cool air of Fall move in to the DC-Metro area. It makes for great jacket weather and strong craving of warm apple cider! On this particularly beautiful Saturday, we decided to venture out of the city and into the Maryland countryside to enjoy the first apple picking trip of the season. First on our list--Baugher's Orchard!

My husband and I had not been to this orchard before, but we chose it on a whim. Baugher's Orchard is located in Westminster, Maryland, through tree-lined winding roads and farms galore. The orchard is well marked and easy to find, with plenty of parking. As soon as we arrived and saw the tractor hauling everyone across the road to the orchard, we felt pretty confident we were going to like this place.

To start, we wondered through the market, which offers fresh fruits and vegetables, bakery items, ice cream, syrups, sauces, and honey. There's also a section of crafts and snacks that were very popular. Across from the barn market we found fresh cut cheese fries and chili cheese dogs (my husband was all over that one). I'm not sure if this little stand is here all the time or not, but it was great for a quick snack before getting on the tractor. The wooden train, swingset, face painting, petting zoo and cut out photo stand were a big hit with the kids. Some families were even smart enough to bring picnic baskets of food to enjoy when they were finished with their apple excursion.

Apple Picking:
When we stepped off of the tractor (about a 2 minute ride) we gathered around a table where a worker explained which type of apples were available for picking and where to go. We had our choice of two bag sizes. Today's pricing was $1.49 per lb., though I imagine this changes depending on crop and market prices. We were impressed to find at least 6 different types of apples that we really liked. We loaded up on perfect apple after perfect apple. All in all, it was a fabulous time.

Baugher's Restaurant:
Be sure to stop by their restaurant, only two miles down the road! It had a very hometown feel to it, great pricing, and delicious homemade ice cream and pies. We are looking forward to returning in October for their Fall Harvest and Hay Ride Festival.

  1. Apple picking, how cool! We've never done that before but it sounds like so much fun. I'm going to have to search for one near us.
